I usually start visually exploring in sketchbook pro, its great for getting the overall feel of a design before locking it down into line art...

heres a rough that has gone through all the stages...

some styles are more reality based...
and some styles want a bit of flair in the proportions...

I design from thumbnail to cleaned and color, all in the same process as I work...
